Last does of special does are bittersweet, especially when they look so much like their dams. Aquilina was a rather scrawny kid, but after Aurelia died of an extreme and fast-acting case of mastitis, we knew she wasn’t going anywhere and metaphorically put her in a closet to grow up without criticism or comparison to her dam. When spring show season came around she came out simply because the other three dry yearlings got dry legs in each of their show debuts. To our surprise, that little sundgau who we feared could never live up to her mom, came in first in a class of a dozen beautiful dry yearlings. Still, her dairiness verged on being overly refined and her rump a bit steep, so we left her home from Nationals. By the time we got to fair season she had grown, lengthened, and filled out just enough that we had to acknowledge that she really is her dam’s daughter. Breeding Aurelia to Occult was an udder breeding, and if there is one thing Aquilina has always excelled with it is her wide eschuteon… so now we wait.

Well Aquilina freshened in 2020, so now we just have to wait for shows and LA. While few others got the joy of seeing this beautiful first freshener we enjoyed her every single day. More than any of Aurelia’s fabulous look-alike daughters, Aquilina really reminds us of her mom. With a show collar on, she walks, sets up, and with that fabulous flat rump looks just like her mom as you look down on her long topline. Although not especially productive (yet), she has a “socked-on” mammary with a wide rear udder and smooth, broad fore udder. And while appropriately gangly for her age, we can see the depth of body coming more each day. She also is the proud mom of our absolute favorite 2020 doe kid, Astoria. We will be repeating that breeding.
