Amelda follows the Aurelia line in perfect fashion: a long, tall, and dairy sundgau that walks into the ring and instantly grabs your attention. We’d like to see a bit more angulation in rear legs, but otherwise this is one heck of a doe. Aurelia has done an incredible job of reproducing herself with literally 3x as many daughters as her mother Fish ever had. They’ve all been so pretty, that in 2016 we realized over half of our herd was an “A-line” doe with an incredible five daughters of Aurelia. In an effort to keep diversity in our herd, we’ve made the hard decision to cut that number in half, putting up for sale Astraea, Advantagia, and Ada. We plan to keep Auriga, Amelda, and her 2017 kid, Aretha.
Amelda freshened with a lovely capacious mammary that especially excels in the foreudder extension. We are especially excited about the production promise of this doe as that is exactly what we hoped to get out of a breeding with Copperfield. From the side profile this doe is practically perfect and has almost as good of a view from the rear, however, just like her dam as a young doe, we would really like to see more width and power in the front end assembly. Having had a large set of triplets and milking a 11-pound average as a first freshener, and then fighting a fungal skin infection over summer, she was a bit underweight and only made it out to two spring shows, but we hope that a winter will restore her health and time will bring maturity to help her balance out. After selling off perhaps too many A-line does last year and then losing both Aretha and Aurelia in unfortunate, rather freak circumstances during 2018, there is also an incredible comfort to looking out in the field and seeing a long, elegant black sundgau, she even has the same ear bobble (benign cyst) that her mom had.
2020 was Amelda’s year–it just wasn’t the world’s year. Peaking at 18 pounds, Amelda proved she could be an exceptional producer with a simple old pair of buck-doe twins. Unlike in 2019, where she was putting most of her energy into milk making, it was lovely to see her fill out and deepen developing a truly lovely big barrel. We’d still like to see more depth and strength in her front end assembly, excited to bring in more bone overall with her breeding to Kaptain for 2021.
