Phenix joined the Barnowl herd in winter 2018, when a friend decided she could no longer make good use of him given the small size of her children’s 4H herd and contacted us as a home where he could really prove his worth. A warm silver-chocolate color just like his mom, who Laurie had always lovingly called the “chocolate truffle,” Phenix really is a sweet treat and brings with him some exciting new genetics, as well as a second chance to integrate more Presto into our herd. Josephine comes down from Hannah, a maternal line known for exceptional general appearance, the style and grace of these does is further strengthened with the addition of Chalupa. Presto we know well and have been so impressed with the consistency of his daughters in both our herd and the Tempo herd, and in a year when we were trying to think up ways to get more of him back, Phenix presented an unforeseen, but timely and exciting opportunity. But what really excites us about Phenix is his littermate sister, Tempo Rachel Alexendra. As a yearling milker, Alex stole the show at the 2017 Oregon State Fair winning Reserve Champion in fierce competition. A lovely doe with the well-attached, globular mammary we’ve come to expect from the magic line, Alex gives us a lot of hope for what Phenix can offer. Given his late addition to the herd, Phenix was used as a “clean-up” buck on some of our top, albeit stubborn-to-settle, does in January 2018, and we are hopeful for some beautiful summer kids.
