Auriga had a phenomenal season in 2018 with success in the show ring, the milk bucket, on appraisal day, and with kidding season. Sadly 2019, like for so many in our herd and frankly across the NW, did not follow suit. Her year started with a difficult kidding of a single doe kid, which really gave her no reason to make milk at 2018 levels (although she still got a few 13+ pound tests in) and made her look a bit stale in the showring. That is until our most competitive fair of the year, Puyallup, where she picked the right day to shine and won the 5 & 6 year old class. The single doe kid, Aloisia, only made it to one show, the Oregon State Fair, where she instantly fell in love with the daughter of Mariah’s coworker–it was mutual and now there is a 5 year old little human in urban Portland drawing pictures of Aloisia and asking for a goat for Christmas! It’s not only her human kid-approved appeal, Aloisia has all the right parts we look for in a goat kid too: dairyness, good feet and legs, wide eschuteon, and stylish general appearance. Reminding us of Aquilina as a kid, who fully blossomed at 2 years old, we’re going to have some patience and let this lady grow up.
While shows and a few fairs might be back, compared to 2020 with how good and healthy the whole herd was, this year reminds us more of the doomed 2019. Too many freak situations that beguile even expensive emergency vets have left us with just a few 2 year olds. Aloisia is not a perfect doe and in many years we may have decided to part with her, but she freshened with one heck of a nice rear udder and has many other good parts that we’re going to let mature and see if they start to fit together better next year.
