Our last Fish daughter, Acapella is an exceptionally tall and long doe who holds lots of promise although we think she is going to be slow to mature in terms of body depth. Acapella has been a labor of love. She failed to settle in 2015 and given her huge frame, we feared that she might not even be fertile. But after living with Joplin for almost all of fall 2015, she miraculously turned up pregnant. She had twins in early 2016, the doe kid we are definitely keeping. While we would like to see a bit fancier mammary system, particularly more balanced teat placement, it really does have good attachments all the way around and were particularly excited to see the increased height and arch of the rear udder compared to her famous dam. It is nice to see a doe who like Fish has a big, open, and flat-boned frame gracing our milking parlor once again. She also is our cover girl, constantly posing for selfies and full of big personality.
Fish only had four surviving daughters, the first ended up in a great 4H home and freshened beautifully but never made it out to the big shows. The next two were twins Aurelia and Bernice, both permanent champions and National Show winners. And the last is Acapella, who hasn’t been in a show ring since she was a gangly kid. Just imagine what could be in her future?!
With Angel, Qazam, and Dharma in the same age group, we are have made the excruciatingly tough decision to part with Acapella even after our long wait and her incredible potential. Her dam and two of her sisters have stood in National Show Championship line-up’s, to say she has potential is quite an understatement! In 2017, much to our chagrin she had three big buck kids, meanwhile her yearling daughter Alyra freshened with a single buck kid, and while not milking very much is an exciting doe. Unfortunately, she came up with some mild, subclinical mastitis issues this spring that have left her uneven–although she still received an “E” in mammary during our Appraisal session. Likely with dry treatment her udder will be recoverable perhaps even to show standards, but even as a brood doe she would make one heck of an addition to most herds.
