Firefly’s ADGA Genetics Pedigree

Firefly is an exciting doe combining two of our strongest doe-lines: Bewitched and Quidditch.  She also is the first dam-raised kid we’ve had in close to a decade after BWitch “announced” she was keeping this one and raised Firefly in the retiree pen with the generous help of auntie Spellbound.   She started to tame down as a young two-year old, but for better or worse, she didn’t become the lovey doe she is now until her mom and matriarch Bewitched died in August 2013. We found Witch early in the morning, she had died as peacefully as we could have asked for in her sleep, with Firefly standing guard over her body until we arrived.

Firefly will be a four-year old in summer 2014 and she is certainly looking grown up these days, both in body and temperament.  With easily the most capacious mammary of our young does, she has the classic Bewitch-udder that can’t be overlooked.  She won a number of classes (2 and 3-year old classes in the northwest typically are over a dozen animals) and picked up a Grand Champion at Clark County Fair in 2013. In 2014, she freshend with an incredible set of quads from a repeat breeding to Blade–we thank all of the buyers who jumped on the opportunity to purchase all four of these kids and are excited to see the Bewitch genetics spreading across the country.  She still has much room to deepen and mature, but we are confident that she will.

An udder that just can’t be dismissed, Firefly does lack levelness in her rump from hips to pins.  With lots of “dinner plate rumps” on all sides of her pedigree we think this will be an easy trait to get back and thus are continuing to target our breedings for Firefly to topline improvements and width in front end assembly. Indeed, we got back a nice rump with her 2016 daughter Marvel and 2017 daughter Twilight Zone. And, at 7 years old, when we’d basically given up that she would ever get that final championship leg, she walked into our competitive NWODGA spring show and went GCH and BOB like it was nothing special. She is now the eighth daughter of Bewitched to be a permanent champion, and we couldn’t be more proud of her.

In 2020, Firefly truly shined as a 10 year old age doe. Of course, there were no appraisals or shows, but during our one day faux-appraisal, good friends were in awe of her incredible strength and youthfulness. Togg breeder Melanie Fergason even compared her to a Toggenburg, which as we all know never age just slowly fade away. Melanie captured a great photo of Firefly in the field, running away from us like a gaited horse–the most common view of still-skidish Firefly for everyone except Ardis. Likely her last kid, Firefly also gave us one beautiful single doe out of Kaptain in 2020, who is tall, strong, and dairy just like her, but already shows improved depth of body and levelness over the rump–we are indeed excited to have her in the herd to continue on Firefly’s legacy.
