Encore is the beautiful and bittersweet last daughter of one of our all-time favorite does, Hockus Pockus. Hockus has been very generous with buck kids, but since being a young milker, she has refused to give us daughters to carry on her incredible legacy. After a false pregnancy in 2014, we were so excited when she settle in 2015, but sadly Hockus died from complications of this last kidding just weeks after this single doe kid was born. Ardis fought hard to keep this little girl with us. She was born unable to walk. We and our vets have no idea what was wrong, but Ardis refused to let that be the end of her story and the end of Hockus’ story in our herd. Thanks to many patient hours everyday of “physical therapy,” Ardis got this little girl up and walking and playing in about a week. Today, you would never know that this doe kid struggled so much in her first week. Colored almost identically to her mother and line-bred quite closely, Encore truly is a second act of Hockus Pockus. Lots of Witch and lots of Tach, we are so excited to see how this doe matures.

Never have we been so grateful for Ardis’ steadfast refusal to give up on an animal. Encore is quite possibly the most exciting doe we have had in our herd in half a decade. As a junior yearling, she secured her dry leg at her first show out with a Best Junior Doe in Show. Now as a first freshening two-year old, she has stood first or second this entire year, has picked up three Reserve Champion titles, and won her first milking leg by beating our other permanent champions in BOB and securing yet another Best Doe in Show award. There is very little we can reasonably fault on this doe. Her toes could be tighter, but that’s not something we breed for. Her length and levelness immediately draw your eye to her, then you notice her dairy strength and depth, but its her beautifully attached mammary that keeps your attention. Her only real issue is that she doesn’t actually like showing and has a bit too much attitude for Mariah to handle with her MS. But we have been determined to make this doe work from day one and a smidge too much LaMancha personality is not going to stop us from letting her be the best doe she can be.

True to form, Encore continues to detest showing, but she is too lovely to not get her into the ring. She freshened late in 2018, missing all of the warm up shows and jumping straight into the tough NW fair competition. At Oregon State Fair, she found herself going Reserve to herdmate Auriga, which was enough to finish her championship, and then onto Puyallup where she took 3rd in a Nationals quality (and size) class. In a year when Auriga and Quivira are really stepping it up, she is less of a stand-out in our herd, but we prefer her being among such high quality peers. Certainly our Breeder’s Trio class for 2018 represents one of our most consistent in our herd history, and she is undoubtedly an anchor. We also are excited to see her reproducing herself in her kids with her dry yearling Seance picking up two competitive Junior Championships and a Best Junior Doe in Show, and her adorable, spoiled rotten summer kids Ouija and Tarot, being well, adorable correct and doted upon summer kids!

In 2020, Encore pulled herself together beautifully after skipping National Show year 2019; of course, 2020 was the year of no shows, no Linear Appraisal. Her twin daughters also freshened exceptionally well, two of the fanciest first fresheners we’ve had in awhile. In our one day stay-at-home show/DIY appraisal/photo shoot, we got some lovely photos of her dam & daughter entry. Unfortunately those would be the last show photos of Encore, in 2021 she had large twin bucks that required vet assistance and while both amazingly survived, Encore incurred too much internal damage and she slipped away just a day after they were born. Gone far too young, Encore leaves a major hole in our barn and in our hearts.
