Marvel is her dam all over again, although with a longer, flatter rump. And like her dam, she is likely to be a slightly awkward, immature looking doe for the next few years. Years ago a fan of Firefly, who also has raised and managed world-class Jersey cows, came to us and said, “she’s dairy and flat-boned, and has a mammary system to die for…and well, she the closest I’ve seen to a cow in dairy goats.” So yes, she is a bit awkward, but when we look at her, we can’t help but think, there’s a Jersey in there just waiting to grow up!

She’s just a bit less awkward as a 2-year old in 2018, but yeah this remains a doe that needs time to grow up. With Quivira on the show string, no other 2 year olds really had a chance to get in the spotlight, but Marvel was a strong doe that placed respectfully, appraised well, and milked especially well. We would love to see a little more of an aesthetically-pleasing angle to her capacious mammary, but her flat-boned, dairy frame and high production has kept her in the barn during some difficult decisions. As a 3 year old in 2019, Marvel continued to prove herself as an exceptional milk doe, as well as a competitive doe in the ring picking up even one Best of Breed in the tough NW show world.

In our ever quest to cut down numbers, we are at the difficult and fortunate position of having to make downsize decisions that are anything but culls. One of our determining factors is whether or not an animal can reach their full potential in our herd. With Marvel’s milk tests coming back routinely in the 14 to 16 pound range on a non-production maximizing feed plan, we truly feel this doe needs to be in a home where her impressive will to milk can qualify her for the Top Ten. Our owner sample test program does not qualify her, thus the reason we are looking to find her a new home where she can fully meet her potential. We weren’t wrong in 2017, she really is a Jersey cow looking for a real dairy.
