Gandalf is a tall, large-framed, and sharp buck who excels in feet and legs, smoothness of blending, body capacity, and strength of bone. In his first and so-far only buck show he was Reserve Champion twice in tough Northwest competition. Multiple herds have now used Gandalf and his kids have demonstrated great consistency in being tall, long, and growthy with superb dairy character and sharpness throughout. We anticipate well-attached and capacious mammaries on his daughters much like we have come to expect from our Travis daughters—six of which are pictured below. Gandalf’s littermate twin, GCH Barnowl Golden Compass 2*M quickly finished her star milk record and her championship at her new Kickapoo-Valley home winning 4xGCH and 3xBOB this year, including being Illinois State Fair Best of Breed.

Quantum Leap is the twin to Quantum Magic, our 2008 Spotlight Sale consignment (purchased by Jocelyn Morris). He is an incredibly handsome buck demonstrating stylish general appearance and a wonderful balance of dairy character and body capacity. He is long and level with a wide, flat rump, superbly pliable skin and open ribbing, and very strong feet and legs. And his striking uphill carriage makes him a real eye-catcher in the field. He has a gorgeous head that in recent years has sprouted a fabulous beard making him a much-loved buck by goat and non-goat farm visitor alike! He was on lease in 2009 and 2010, but we are already getting some great reports back on how lovely his young daughters are! He will be one of our primary herdsires for the 2011 breeding season, we are looking forward to him delivering on style, general appearance, width throughout, and strong mammary attachments.

We are super excited about this young buckling! Combining the incredible general appearance of Tach with the amazing consistency of mammary systems in the Buffy-line, Blade is the junior herdsire we have been waiting for. He is large-framed, wedgy buckling with great spring of ribs, dairy character throughout, a strong head, lots of width throughout, and very solid feet and legs. Despite being wide and flat from thurl to thurl, we would like to see Blade’s rump slightly flatter from hips to pins, a trait we’ve had a hard time breeding out of Buffy and slightly longer from hips to pins considering his great length of topline otherwise, but again we have found this is one of the few Tach traits that has been less than consistently ideal. Nevertheless, we are excited to be using this young buckling that should help maintain the characteristic large-framed, very dairy, and beautiful mammaried does that Barnowl has become known for.

Much like his paternal brother Gandalf, Dark is a tall, long, and sound buck that displays even more strength of dairy character and overall refinement of bone. We have been so impressed by the consistency of our Travis daughters with their strength across the scorecard and superb mammary systems—as Laurie notes, “another Travis udder” is a common comment heard at NW shows. Just take a look at six of his daughters below. In 2010 we focused on line-breeding off Travis and couldn’t be more excited to get to also introduce genetics from this beautiful Tempo maternal line. Audrey was one of Laurie’s foundation LaManchas and was Katya’s co-hort in crime, to say we’ve long since admired Audrey and her daughters’ style, dairyness, and structure would be a huge understatement. The 2011 kids sired by Very Dark were very exciting–long, dairy, stylish animals with the type of balance between refinement and strength that we love to see. Two of his doelings particularly stood out, Barnowl Aurelia and Barnowl Prestige, both of whom easily won their dry legs and Best Junior Doe in Show at extremely competitive shows.

It is with great pleasure and gratitude that we announce our special opportunity to lease Victor this fall from our good friend Trisha Walker of Huricane-PM Dairy Goats. Victor provides us the opportunity to integrate some of the incredible does of California that we have long admired, including the powerhouse doe Velour owned by Trinity Smith of Goat-San LaManchas, as well as GCH Kastdemur’s Survivor 2*M, who has long been one of our absolute favorites among the incredible Kastdemur’s herd. In a year where we are focusing on restoring and maintaining our characteristic large-framed, dairy does while looking to increase milk capacity, we think that Victor is the perfect man for the job!

Laurie bought Tach when Evian was just a milking yearling and we were fortunate enough to get to use him early on. Since then, his dam has been ADGA National Champion twice, his daughter SGCH Tempo Evianna 9*M won Reserve National Champion as a milking yearling, and his other progeny continue to dominate in the show ring, milk room, and on appraisal day. Tach himself is a long, level large-framed buck who excels in dairy character. His daughters have impressive mammary systems, but it is their consistency of this stylish general appearance that is perhaps most impressive and makes most any combination of the daughters a successful get of sire. We are thankful to Laurie Acton for allowing us this lifetime opportunity to get to share in these groundbreaking genetics, and thankful to the Senns of the Kastdemur’s herd for continuing to breed such beautiful animals!

Fingers crossed and knock on wood, but we think Quatchi is going to be our next big Barnowl doe! Fittingly she is named after the larger-than-life Northwest mythological creature Sas”quatch.” Long, tall, dairy, level, and wide only begin to describe the structural soundness of this beautiful doe. As one of a set of triplet does, there are also two more lovely TachxQuidditch does out there, one in New Jersey at Dalton’s Way and one in Oregon at Huricane-PM, we wish both of those does the best in their new homes.
